Jan Bułhak's apartment in Vilnius, at 3 Orzeszkowa Street, burned down. The family moved to Warsaw, to the Żoliborz district, where Jan and Janusz Bułhak continued their photographic work at 18 Krasińskiego Street. Unlike before World War II, one will no longer find idyllic scenes, picturesque manors, or mysterious nature in the photographer's work. In the second half of the 1940s, Jan Bułhak traversed the ruined city with his camera, documenting the scale of the destruction as well as the first attempts at reconstruction, especially of strategic sites such as the Poniatowski Bridge or the viaduct towards Żoliborz. Idyllic scenes were replaced by horror, and picturesqueness by documentary style—something the artist had previously avoided. This was the final stage of the artistic journey of the photographer, who died in 1950.
